This year, instead of planting in trenches we used a dibber then raked over flat with the intention of earthing up later. Although my wife and I put in 170 spuds it could be counted in minutes rather than hours, be interesting to see if there's any difference in yields. I use a bit of wood - from the base of a parasol. It's pointed - acts like a big dibber. Just ram it in a foot or so, drop spud in and cover.
No digging trenches for me! I don't even bother earth in up with this method either.

I plant all my pot-raised (9cm) plants using the bulb planter - ornamentals and veg. Its very quick, and I have some arthritis in my hands / wrists, which means that after a few holes with a trowel I'm winging and deciding that skiving off to make a cuppa would be good - which would mean that the job would never get finished!
