I've tried to germinate 3 packets of seed so far this year and had no success whatsoever, I know they can take a long time though. Think I'm going to cheat and buy a few plants instead

First ones (T&M Golden Berry Pineapple) were in a thermostatically controlled prop at 20 with my tomatoes back in January. Everything else germinated.
This lot are Unwins Little Lanterns, they are in a different heated prop but I've only been heating it during the night as they are in a warm room. They went in on the 15th or 16th April. I suppose they are potentially still viable but there is nothing showing at the moment.

I sowed the James Wong Suttons ones on the 9th March in an old electric propagator (not thermostatically controlled), they were first showing on the 19th March.

You might just need to give them a little more time.

I have wondered about the compost- I normally just use mpc but back in Jan we were able to buy a load of 50L split bags of John Innes Seed compost for £2 per bag. Most weren't really that damaged so thought it was a good deal- I have to say I haven't been very impressed- think I'm just going to use it as soil conditioner. Can't think of anything else really.

I have suttons cape gooseberry (physalis edulis), I chitted mine in damp kitchen roll in a plastic box by the radiator, before planting them, they took a little while.

Mine were sown in JI seed compost . . . and have been potted on into JI no.2
