Physalis

Hi everyone, Has anybody tried to grow Physalis on an allotment? or do they need protection, i.e polytunnel or greenhouse? also where to get the plants from? I keep reading they are easy as tomatos to grow, but cant find anywhere that sells the plants?

I am growing some from seed, I started them the same as I would Tomatoes, in an electric propagator on the 9th March. They are on their first and second true leaves so have a little way to go before I pot them up from their individual cells. Suttons James Wong range includes Inca Berries which are Physalis . . . To answer your question more specifically . . James Wong says they will grow outside (scroll about a third of the way down)

I sowed some last week nothing popping up can't wait I remember having them as a kid at my Nans house when I was about 6

thanks for the replies, wanted to grow them because the kids love them and they cost a fortune for the amount you get in the packet at the supermarket. i cant help thinking if they are so easy to grow, then why do we import them to sell in our shops? i work at Tesco and our last lot came from Columbia! I think i'll get some seeds and see what happens. fingers cross

They are quite easy to grow - even I've managed!

One note of caution though, not all Physalis are edible - check your seed type when you buy them.

i grow physalis as perennials in my polytunnel .they really need to be indoors to produce good berries. my original plants were grown from seeds that i saved from a supermarket fruit .

I picked 9 ripe physalis in the GH today.
My first seeds came from supermarket fruit and I've been growing them on for years now. Very easy to grow from seed and they are perennial - in my GH anyway
Next time you buy some, save the seeds for sowing.

I have two planted in lottie gh and 1 planted outside...they all died back over winter and the gh ones have started sprouting again ...how the 'eck did you manage to pick some today VC, didn't they die back ?

Mine didn't Bins, I had a few last week.. The bush is dead but the fruits are still on it.... I haven't yet tidied up in the GH yet

They're new plants started last year - just started fruiting
Some lovely new bushy shoots at the base now.

mine looked dead Scarlet but they are putting up new shoots from the bottom , so I've cut back all the dead stuff . Bit like growing an outdoors fuschia......wait till they shoot from the base then cut all last years stuff back.

These were picked last year and have been sitting in a tub on the windowsill since then, they certainly keep well
