Thanks everyone. I think, on balance, I might be being a bit unrealistic and the theory of this particular plot might be better than the reality of it.
It would be a 20 minute drive up dual carriageway then (at least) another 5 minutes across town. I think I liked the idea so much that I was trying to gloss over the downsides. It's not in a place where I could just nip to easily and it would likely become an issue given all the other places I need to be, for family stuff / school etc .
I just got a bit excited for a minute.

Roughly how far is it / how long does it take you to get there?
I think you need to consider how much time you can regularly spend in any one visit . . . if you are pushed for time and can only spend an hour at a time the time spent traveling will be large in relation to the time spent at the plot . . . if you can spend 4 hours during a visit then the traveling time is less relevant.

My "plot" is my garden, so just out the kitchen door. I work from home and have a couple of kids so with all the trips to school, rugby, clubs etc means the free time I have is really split. I may only do an hour one day, 10 mins here and there but even that makes a difference. An hours drive there and back to your plot is an hour lost. I really would look for somewhere closer.

8 minutes walk front door to shed door, unless like usual I end up stopping to chat before I reach the plot. From my upstairs window I can also see my allotment through bino's and actually saw (and then caught) two burglars in my shed.Location ... Nottingham

Just over a mile away - a couple of minutes by car. I do plan on fixing my bike up and biking it there, but haven't got around to it yet (I daren't - if the boss caught me messing with my bike (that she doesn't really know I have !) I'd fear for me thingies).

Used to be a 15 min car ride, now it's a fall over the back step which suits me just fine.............sigpic“Gorillas are very intelligent, but they don't have to be as delicate as chimps -- they can just smash open the termite nest,”

Mine is about 10 minutes in the car - far enough to mean that I go up and make an effort to spend a good chunk of time but also fair enough that just "popping over there" is sometimes a bit of a chore for a two minute job.

Until we gave it up this week it was about 1.5 miles away, but without a car and having a bum knee (from a very bad sprain last year) and ankle (from a car accident), walking there and back was pretty tiring. Plus with my mum being a pensioner and being pretty ill this winter herself, we just couldn't keep up with the weeding etc.
So now we're building a mini allotment (lots of raised beds) in the back/side gardens, less growing room but I can grab the tools and be ready to crack on at a moment's noticeLast edited by KarlB924; 20-04-2014, 10:32 PM.
