  • Weed help

I have sown some peas but only a handful have sprouted up so far. I have hoed the rest of my beds but have not hoed the bed with peas as I don't want to damage them but there is a certain weed growing all over it. Its a surface weed and looks a bit like salad cress. I was wondering if anyone knew its name and the best way to weed around peas? Thank you

I think it might be a case of down on hands and knees hand weeding. You may find a little onion hoe helpful.

Carefully. I pulled one out the other day while weeding out goose grass. I HATE that stuff. You could always leave it as a living mulch and weed it out at the end of the season. It might hinder the ones that haven't sprouted yet though. The ones that have should find their way upwards alright though, so maybe just weed out where the unsprouted peas are.

        chickweed?

it's stretchy then snaps when you pull it, so make sure you grab it at the roots and get the whole thing out.

We have loads of chickweed, I've learned to live with it. There's worse weeds...

You can eat chickweed so technically you could call it a crop

The problem with chickweed is it smothers seedlings! I lost a batch of healthy carrot seedlings due to the rampant growth of the chickweed. I'm really diligent when it comes to hand weeding, and whilst I haven't eliminated it,I keep it in check! The other problem I found was if I covered a crop such as salad leaves (or carrot) it seems to cause a micro climate and the chickweed went be bezerk!!, jumbo chickweed strangled salad.Dont let it flower.
Shadylane....what weeds do you find worse, just out of interest?

Bindweed and couch grass are a nightmare on my plot and although I've got a load of horsetail it doesn't really bother me that much and the chickweed isn't that bad at all

                      Ugh, where do I start:
*nettles - they always bite me no matter how careful I am and I lost one half of my nettle proof gloves somewhere so they get me even more now...

*dandelion - arrgh hate hate hate

*goose grass, grows around everything, hard to get the root out, seeds everywhere and sticks to you

                      *creeping buttercup - just NO

*docks - they go down to the earth's core you know(although I don't mind them too much cos they're handy for nettle stings)

*thistles - I never let them seed yet every year up they come
I actually quite like couch grass. I find it quite satisfying when you pull it up and the root just keeps coming and coming and then finally pops out. Unless that's not couch - I think it is though.

Bind weed every time. My first garden was infested with it. Just keeping it in check was a full time job

Well, on a slightly different thread I wish I had more weeds as my chickens love them! I now have to go out looking for weeds to feed them with
