New Allotment

Hi,
Just been to check out a new allotment site today. I have been offered an allotment but haven't signed the tendency agreement yet.
I'm unsure on the rules of this site wether fencing is possible or wether I can build a shed. I'm just looking for anyone with any info on getting a new allotment and how to find out more info about the site before signing for it? Do these rules differ with different councils?

Hello Littleshallot and welcome.
Different sites have different rules - you need to ask whoever is responsible for the site. You'll also get some ideas by looking at the other plots - do they have fencing and sheds?

They are all completely new sites and so no one has started work on then yet. There are currently no fences around the indictable plots but there are fences around the entire site. It looks as though someone is preparing to begin to put up a fence but I believe I will either need to email for more info or wait and see if they send me more info once they receive. My acceptance, was this the case with yours?

Are they privately owned or council ones?
I no longer have an allotment but mine was a well established Council one. The site was fenced but individual plots weren't and we had to ask permission to put up a shed.

Normally the council will have something on their website. On the site where my plot is we have brick built communal sheps and all plots have to have a boundry fence. Sheds are allowed on plots as long as they don't exceed 6 x 4 feet. Where are you based?

New Allotment

You should have received a tenancy agreement when you got the plot saying what you can & can't do. If not ask for a copy ASAP.this should include all the relevant rules , if not, ask before signing

There are many rules on an allotment from maintaining your plot to building structures to keeping livestock. As Snakeshack says, it should all be written down on your tenancy agreement.

Okay Thankyou everyone for your comments! Realy appreciate all the help you have given. It is a council owned one. I am very much in the early stages and will be recieving a tenancy agreement very soon so that should give me far more information hopefully Thankyou all! Can't wait to get going

Hi there. Just a bit late but welcome.
Just enforcing what everyone else has said. Make sure you get an agreement and read through it. I have had my plot for two years now and have only just got mine. Have read through it and it turns out you can't plant fruit trees. No one told me and no one said anything when I put them in.
Best advice I could give you is when you get your plot take pictures. I know its a new one but you'd be amazed what you forget from when you see it, go home and then see it again.
Also take a piece of paper down and draw a rough picture and where you might want things. then when you get home you can work on it a bit more. Remember its not set in stone.
