  • Allotment plot offer- advice needed

    Hi everyone,

I have been on the waiting list for an allotment for a while and I finally been offered a plot, woo hoo! however, the plot is north facing with large trees behind me. I viewed the plot at about 6pm when it was mostly in the shade. I am a complete novice to gardening and I'm worried that the plot will get too much shade and growing veg will be difficult.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thank you😄

You will still be able to grow stuff but a sunny position is better than a complete shaded one go down there a few times too check out at different times but my view is beggers can't be choosers.

I'd be more worried about the tree roots take a spade and dig at the soil trees take out a lot of food your plants want.

My first plot was in shade for most of the day and it grew stuff you can always ask to move to a sunnier position if a plot becomes available.

Hi Cazza and welcome to the Vine.

Are there other plots on the site which have the same sort of aspect? If so, see how those plots compare to others on the site. If they look a bit lacklustre in comparison, think twice. Also, go down to the site when it's busy (Sat or Sun morning always a good time) and ask the plotholders what they think - if that plot is a real bugbear and no-one can make it work, they will be sure to let you know.

You could always ask the committee if you can try this plot, but stay on the waiting list for if another plot on the site becomes vacant. You might think that you are working on a plot that you might not keep for long, but think of it as a 'practice run'.

Thanks for the advice. I am going to view it again tomorrow and see if anyone is about to ask. There is such demand on the waiting list, if I turn it down I will be taken off the list

If that's the case, it sounds like you've answered your own question and you might as well take it!

I'd still ask if you could remain on the list if you take on a 'suspect' plot.

Would you mind putting your approx location in your profile - it'll help when people are giving you advice to know roughly where you are in the country (if indeed, you are in this country!).
