  • Pig Manure

Any thoughts on pig manure for the plot ? I have access to some on a hard standing by the road side so i can bag it easy whopping heap going back years. Had a quick google and it all seems doom and gloom about it.
The pigs are kept indoors and fed pellets not sure if they get scraps or not

I haven't read up on it but I presume this will cause a debate! Pigs can be meat eaters but I don't think they eat the rubbish mush anymore. Two sheds loves all thing compost so perhaps she will be along soon. My thoughts would be if it has broken down its good to go.

I would think if it is years old as you state, it will be good.

I think that I'm right in saying that pigs can't by law be fed scraps anymore.

If you have any problems you can always rub some "Oinkment" on it.

That must have been from a pet pig though Lottie, kept outside? The Op says these pigs are in kept in inside pens and only fed pellets, they haven't got access to outside greens.

No Scarlet, someone my DH worked with kept a few on the family small farm,no idea what they were fed on,from the size of the weeds i would say it did wonders for the weeds.it was a long while back, may 30 years, but we never forgot it

You may find although TS is proactive when it comes to composting, I'm not sure she would recommend using it. I know the link relates to horses but I suppose pigs could be included.

Two_Sheds has never said don't use manure, she correctly points out there are a large range of alternatives, also she often says .... use what is available to you ... so if it were me then I would use it,chicken poo is the current vogue & they are feed on pellets

I would agree. It will enrich your soil in many ways - as will many other methods, and if it is free then it is always worth considering. The problem with manure, is that you may find that weed seeds will germinate more freely in the improved soil, but hopefully your veggies will benefit too.

I see T_S replied in that thread ..

Any manure is ready to use when it no longer looks or smells like the starting product: it should be dark brown, crumbly and smell sweet. The time depends on conditions: warmth, moisture and aeration
                            Looks like good advice there
