  • (parsnips) may be a daft question but....

As I was preparing a rather large shop bought parsnip for tea tonight, the thought crossed my mind as to whether its possible to take the top bit (with a few little root/grass tips still on), plant that and produce a new parsnip from it.... ?????

Can I get a seed from a shop bought parsnip to sow???

May be the daftest question and for that I apologise, but wanted to ask! Thanks x

Dunno. I remember growing carrot tops as a kid on a saucer with soggy kitchen roll, but whether you could keep it going long enough to flower and produce seed. Also you are meant to start pineapple plants in a similar way. Supporting a parsnip flower would need to be considered as they get to around 1-1.5m tall its not a daft question at all

Do Parsnip growers tend to use F1 seed for Supermarket crops I wonder?

I let the end of a row of parsnips seed a few years ago and the flowers produced were great, very like carrot flowers but yellow not white and much much bigger! They make a lovely plant, so perhaps if you get your parsnip top to root (will it produce roots or only leaves?) you could plant it up and use it in the flower border?
