Finally got my allotment

After quite a while waiting, I have finally been offered an allotment.

It isnt on the site I wanted, but having visited it, I am not disappointed.

It's a small site with 9 full allotment plots, although 2 of these have been made into half plots and it's one of these half plots I have been offered.

On my visit there, I got talking to the guy who has the adjacent allotment, he was very keen to show me how good the soil is on the plot and it turns out he has been using it for a while, whilst it was ownerless - so luckily for me there won't be too much digging.


Now is the quandry of how to move forward, I wasn't really expecting to get offered an allotment this summer, so have no plans.

I do have some pumpkins, runner beans, peas, corn, beetroot and leeks ready to be planted on, but I am unsure whether to just leave it at this for now and concentrate on other things, such as erecting a shed, compost bins, water saving, beds, etc.

I guess I will have to talk to my brother-in-law who I am sharing the plot with and move on from there, I most certainly will be a regular on this part of the forums though, so expect an abudence of questions soon.

Congrats on getting your lottie, Leeder.Why not have a word with the person on the adjacent plot who has been using it. He may have had plans for it and, for this year, you could take over from where he left off, so to speak. I'm sure he'll be full of ideas what you can do for this year.Welcome to the 'vine'.

Hi thinking about your plot if you have plants to plant get them in you can fix compost bins and sheds later best of luck with you plot jacob

Congratulations, Leeder. If I were you and had plants ready to go out I would put them on the lottie. At least they will hopefully crowd out the weeds that will surely grow otherwise. Whereabouts in Plymouth are you? I was born in Plymouth and grew up in a little village on the edge of Dartmoor near Ivybridge, so I knew the area quite well.

Rustylady: I am living in St.Budeaux now and the allotment is in North Prospect/Keyham area, but a lot quieter than I expected it would be.

Infact it is so tucked away, I must have drove past it thousands of times, yet never knew it was there.


I have been desperate for an allotment for ages, as I only have a small courtyard garden here and have to grow everything in pots, whereas I previously lived in Yealmpton with my partner and we had an acre of garden to play with. As you can imagine, the downsizing of green space was difficult to get used to.

I know St Budeaux quite well - my first serious boyfriend lived there. Up the hill on the way to the Tamar Bridge. Do the mud flats near Keyham still smell at low tide in the hot weather? I also know Yealmpton, I used to live in Cornwood. That's the good thing about most allotment sites, they are tucked out of the way. Helps cut down on vandalism and gives you a nice quiet place to garden, contemplate, etc.

It sure does, and the pong from the Weston Mill sewage works is unbearable, luckily enough I am no where near either

Congrats I am the same but Have had my plot about a week 2FT HIGH IN WEEDS SO A LOT OF WORK TO DO FIRST B4 THE FUN STARTS. Thats if I get the dam pertol strimeer to work.

well done leeder, we,ve had our lottie for about two years now. (by the way i've highjacked oh's pc while he was in bathroom) it takes ages to get past the digging stage, and we are about two thirds of the way down our plot, and, this year we hope to get a much better variety of veggies than last year, picked some salad leaves today, not much i know, but we've got such a boggy plot we're grateful for anything after the recent weather. raised beds spring to mind.
got cherry tomatoes tho' and co-op plum toms are looking good from saved seeds last year been told to stop now, oh is back and says my bath is ready, and i don't need to write war and peace lol i'm woolymummoth by the way

Congratulations Leeder - I know how exciting it is getting your own allotment. We had one before we moved house - got a bigger garden now but it's never big enough! Got my name down recently but not hopeful it will happen soon!
