  • Poloystyrene (usefull or not)

Hi at work I have lots of 20mm polystyrene sheets that are used for packaging and is just skipped. Can this be used for anything on my allotment or to insullate anything I know seems like a strange question but if its free and helps then why not.
    Any ideas appreciated

Polystyrene slabs are good for insulation. Lining cold frames, or standing pots on in the greenhouse, etc.

I was going to suggest that! I grew my first ever courgettes last year and the ones that got a bit big, I slipped polystyrene trays underneath them to keep them away from the soil. It worked a treat.

In the past I've used it broken into chunks in the bottom of big containers for drainage - the ones where they weigh enough empty and you don't want to do yourself a damage if you ever have to move them! Mind you, when you come to dismantle the thing, all the roots taffle up in the polystyrene and it's difficult to disentangle.
