Killing large area of grass

Hi all,

I want to kill a large area of grass and weeds so next year I can extend my allotment into one of my fields. i was thinking of covering with a fabric or plastic. It may be on there for 6 months plus before I get around to doing the work. Would this be strong enough? - GREEN 125GSM Extra Heavy Duty Weed Control Driveway Garden Fabric + Pegs Option | eBay

It certainly looks to be good quality - though many here will suggest improvising with various other things, instead of buying new. A myriad of things will achieve the same effect, though perhaps not with the same aesthetics!
Down for six months? That period of time should certainly kill off the grass and any lurking seeds.

If you can keep the edges down to stop the light creeping in, and re-sort it after the high winds blow it away...
Cardboard underneath is an extra light blocker too and helps insulate the worms.

Looks expensive to me, and I would choose Black rather than Green (lets less light through). I think 100 gsm is strong enough.

However, the description (rather than the Title) does not specifically say "Mypex" nor "UV Stabilised" so I would choose a different supplier that does explicitly say that!

I've used a product called Zybal, which was cheaper than Mypex, but I can't see anyone listing it on eBay at present (or I have forgotten the correct spelling!)

To hold it down one option is to make U-shaped pegs from stiff wire - make the top bit wide - at least a foot - and the vertical "pegs" at each end as long as you need to get a good grip into the soil. 6" may be enough, unless you are on very light soil. Blocks on the top will still let the fabric flap about, and the pegs with barbs, sold with the Membrane, are expensive and very difficult to remove from the membrane, should you need to roll it up.

Sadly, mulches don't kill off seeds. As soon as the mulch comes off, the seeds will germinate, but it's easy enough to keep on top of the weeding of them.
