My girlfriend and I started a plot back in May 2014.
When we took the plot it had been mostly left for years to just over grow - a common occurrence I imagine!
The rear third was a jungle. We soon found out that it was the previous owners herb and root vegetable beds and had apparently been burning things in the middle of it for a while too.
We've got common fennel all over the damn thing and those tap roots go incredibly deep in the the clay layer we have about 2 - 3 spades down.
Luckily(?) for a short while one of the older chaps in the community had cleared the other two thirds for a young lad to get some potatoes and onions in it but he'd then not done anything with it either.
This did mean that we did manage to get some veg out without a lot of work and the older guys gave us a lot of help and advice to clear down the plot and get stuff in so we could at least reap some of the benefits.
My girlfriend has done a lot more than me so far! She has been a digging demon and can quite 'happily' dig a whole section for a day whereas I dig for 20 minutes and I want a nap.
So far the plan is to work on keeping it clear of weeds (a pain...) and I want to try out mulching and layering, a la Supersprouts plots, but we have no car at the moment and we're trying not to spend too much money on it.
I've been trying to blog about it as well:
