Where can I get more topsoil?

Has anyone any ideas how to get cheap or free topsoil for my lotty?
ATM it is only a foot deep in places after I removed all the stones, bricks
and hardcore from one part of my plot.

That's difficult, and likely to be expensive if you have to buy it, sorry I don't know where you cud get it free. Maybe you could do a section at a tine, building it up with manure/ compost etc, some crops don't need much depth.

Someone else may have better ideas.

What can you get for free/cheap? Manure, woodchip, municipal compost, shredded paper?
Whatever you can grab, pile it up on your beds. It'll soon turn into "topsoil".

Keep your eye on local skips when builders are digging out footings for walls, etc.
Try your local freecycle.

Make loads of leafmold every autumn; use "chop n drop" mulching all year round.
Much much quicker than normal composting

Often free top soil on ebay or Gumtree..Suspect quality varies considerably depending on where it's from but definitely worth a look..

Any major roadbuilding going on nearby? Previously I've got old kerbstones just for the asking - and sometimes they are just looking to get rid stuff to landfill. Just ask the foreman nicely - you never know.

If it's for an allotment, I'd advise checking your tenancy agreement. Some sites don't allow topsoil to be brought in because of the nasties you could import with it.

Freecycle. Few years back I gave away loads thirt odd bags worth. Could probably do with some now myself but hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Another vote for freecycle but as above, try and get an idea of the quality before heaving it away and onto your veggies!
