How long did you wait for yours?

Hi All,

I have been added to the waiting list for a small site I did not realise existed fairly close to home. I've been informed it has a very long waiting list.

So, just how patient are you lot? How long did you wait until you were allocated a plot?

I suspect I might have a (even more) wizened look about me by the time I get one!

I phoned and was told I was 11th on the list, but a month or so later I got the call - so I waited two and a half years.
I got lucky as a few of the old boys either gave up or passed away, at around the same time, and a few of the people above me on the list were no longer interested. Result!

I heard almost immediately but I got in before they were so popular.

I waited about 5 and a half years for the first half plot and 3 years for the second. It's only shorter for the second as we had a lot more plots than normal come free and we're bringing others back into use this year. We don't advertise our existence much and I think people choose not to go on it when they hear how long the list actually is.

I had inside information about plots coming vacant because of neglect, and put my name on the list. I was 5th. I got an email offering me the plot I'd asked for within a week. The list is up to 4 again, so I went back on, in case the one next to me, which is uncultivated, comes free. They aren't big, so 2 next to each other would be great. The list on my old site isn't very long either, so once I give mine up I hope it will be allocated quickly so it doesn't get too unkept.

When my husband decided he wanted one about 8 years ago I went on t'internet and found a site about a mile away. Within 2 hours we had sighed up for two. They'd not been cultivated for over a decade. At the time we had no idea of the hard work we were letting ourselves in for!!!!

I decided I'd like a plot one Christmas as my youngest was in full time school. I started on it Easter Sunday. Our site has 68 plots, the turnover is about 3-4 a year, although one year we had 9 change hands. I've now got a second plot and son leaves school this year! How time flies.

I waited 3 years and i have moved 3 times since,and each one was overgrown about 10 years worth.
the thing is to go down every few weeks and keep on at the committee .
Te thing is they have theire plot and as long as the money is comming in they dont all bother.

Pester them why should i be on waiting list when they cannot be bothered to do anything
and you can get results.
I bet you can count on one hand the people that have got a plot and it was ready to go 99.9%
will have been left for years .

7 long years but was very particular about the site I wanted, our town is on a hill and those towards the bottom are very chalky, got there in the end

The council had ignored my letters so I went up to the site in March 2013 and took a plot there and then.

Similar to mine Martin but you can do it if you put the effort in
we have some like that now and they have had 3 or 4 letters but it dont get through to them.

Ihad to look twice i thought it was one of the 10 that are on our allotment but no.

At our last house I was on a few lists for over 8 years and did not get a plot. Since moving here, I wasn't aware of any sites within a realistic distance and our lil' un was 3 then. Two years on, I find out there is a site on a route I take a few times a week and is less than 10 mins in the car, 20 on the bike. It's a committee non council managed site.

I've been invited to take a look and will pop down there as soon as I can.
