Brassicas & Legumes in the same bed??

Hi everyone,
I've finally got another bed prepared, 3m x 1.2m. I was intending for it to be the autumn/winter brassica bed, but... I have 12 dwarf bean plants, and 8 pea plants (Waverex petit pois) which need a home. I wondered if, as the brassicas won't take up all the space til later, I could plant them in between each other? (The brassicas are savoy cabbages, brussels sprouts and kale.) And if so, what sort of spacing can I get away with?
The other option is to go buy a couple of big tubs to plant the peas and beans in, but this also means buying a load more compost which I'd rather not do!

Give it a try. Only problem I can think of is that the peas and beans may shade the brassicas too much, causing them to get leggy. Dwarf beans shouldn't be too bad, but peas get lots of leaf on them. Your spacing may have to be on the generous side.

You don't mention if you are growing the brasicas yourself, how big they are and where they are planted now?

I would plant the frenchies and the petit pois and hold back as long as you can for planting the brassicas. I have eight different types of winter brassicas sown in 8" pots. At present they are just at the seed leaf stage and will probably hang fire til August for me if required. As the brassicas will be quite large transplants they should be easy to fit in. With a bit of luck the peas and beans will be almost finished by the time you plant the brassicas!

I've grown the brassicas myself - they're in large-ish cell trays at mo (bout 2"x3"?) the cabbages are at 2 pairs of 'true' leaf, more cabbge, sprouts & kale have 1 pair. Got a dozen cabbages, half doz sprouts, half doz kale.
