  • Aldi Peat free

So once again I'm having peat free sourcing issues as our local GC has stopped selling New Horizon due to demand. I don't know anywhere else locally that sells it. It annoys me no end. They're supposed to be phasing out peat based composts, yet make it nigh on impossible to get peat free.

Anyway popped into Aldi and saw they were selling 40 litre bags of peat free for 1.99 so picked up a couple. So has anyone used it? How did it do? I haven't opened it yet although I had a look at one that was open. Just hope it isn't full of plastic and carp.

BM beat me to it! Jungle Jane has trialed the A1di peat free, so you could PM her to see what growing results that she has had with it, if she doesn't drop by here.

I tried it about 3 years ago, and - by total chance - I used the last of the NH compo in one tray of bean seeds, the first of the A1di in another. Same seed, sown the same time - not one germination from the A1di stuff. Might have been just me.

If you want new horizon then I noticed a pallet full in the entrance of my local Morrisons the other day. If you have a Morrisons nearby it might be worth having a look.....
Posted on an iPad so apologies for any randomly auto-corrected gobbledegook

Yes I've used the a1di compost & new horizon compost, both seem as good as each other at holding moisture, some composts have a dry texture being peat free, but both of these composts are fine. There were a few more sticks,a couple of bigger sticks but for the price it's very good.

Thanks for the review, Jane - mine must have been a duff batch.

I've only used it for potatoes & potting on,had to be careful with the sticks in it when potting on,I was worried they could crush the stem, but easily worked around.

So here we have aldis peat free multi purpose at £1.99 for 40 litres.
Works out at approx 5p per litre.
The picture with the sieve shows the sieved product on the left and on the right, what was left after I got bored of sieving. It is very woody and not a particularly nice texture. I've potted on some tomatoes into it and they haven't died yet. I've also sowed some flower seeds so will update in a few weeks to report back how things are doing.

ETA: Ooops I meant to post this on the compare thread.
