  • Onions in tights!!

Been told that if you place onions in the leg of old pair of tights or stockings they will last for ages. Drop the first onion into the foot, tie a knot to keep them separate, add more onions repeating the knots.
Anyone heard of this or done it? If so why does it work ?

I think lots of people do that as a way of storage - I don't think it's meant to make them last longer. They need to be dry first, I think. I just dry mine in trays in the tunnel and then plait them up round strings. Any that don't have dried stems for plaiting just get eaten first!

That's how I always store my main crop onions, works really well (save old tights for it every year)

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Used to do this - just snip off the bottom onion when you want one. Because no onion is actually touching each other, if one goes bad it's easier to catch the rot before it spreads, which makes them last longer I suppose.
