  • Upcycling iron gates

    Morning all!

When we took over our lottie a few years ago someone had dumped a pair of large iron gates at the bottom of the plot! They are far too big to easily get into our car (and still drive it anyway) so we cannot just take them to the scrap merchant. Anyway they have sat on the plot for ages and I really think it's time we did something with them!

So...I'm looking for some ideas to use them on the plot. They are each about 1m tall by about 2m wide (ish, measured by eye not properly or anything!!). So far I had thought about using them to tie in blackberries or maybe to grow a nice climber up? As they are so heavy they need to be used permanently in one place, I can't move them about a lot!

Anyone have any other/better/more imaginative ideas?

    Ta!!

Stick a pallet between them to form an 'H', you now have two composting areas back to back. Line them with chicken mesh if the rails are too wide apart.

The trellis idea is also a good one.

Do you think you could make an arbour if you had them in an "L" shape, with a seating area within, which would also help the walls stay solid,as a middle joint? Then you could still use as a trellis, for grapes & anything?

Turn them up on end and put some wood across the top to make an arch for the entrance to your plot and grow squash, beans, apples, etc over it.

Or take some pics and sell them on eBay "collection only" and get someone to pay you for carrying them off your plot and out of your way.

Rather liking these ideas, thanks! Especially the arch idea! Once I have "dealt with" (ha ha as if it will ever happen) the forest of couch grass and bindweed, it might just be time for some DIY-ing!
