Chicken Manure

Hi all,

I've been offered some chicken manure to use on my plot. I've never used it before, so I'm not really sure what to do with it... scatter it around mature plants (brassicas), rake it into empty beds to fertilise for next year? Add it to my compost heap? Make a liquid feed to sit over winter?

I know lots of grapes have hens, so come on, tell me how best to use this valuable resource?

Mine is mixed with woodshavings and gets used as a mulch. My belief being the nitrogen rich poo counteracts the nitrogen robbing shavings and as a mulch it will only effect the upper surface of the soil anyway. However your safest bet is to stick it in your compost heap.

as NG says, Nitrogen is an issue with chicken muck and she counteracts the effect with what she is doing. It can simply be too fiery for many plants and mixing it through the compost heap doesn't just counteract that, it acts as an accelerant and helps achieve higher temperatures as well as getting useable compost quicker.

Can't remember where I heard it but mixing woodash with chicken manure is supposed to be good so that's what I'm gonna do.

I used chicken manure pellets last year and had some really good results I just dig the bed over and scatter it all over to break down over the winter.

Yes, I've used pellets before, but this is 'fresh', which is a different beast altogether I think.
