  • Square Foot Gardening.

I took over a small allotment a few weeks ago and spent that time getting rid of the jungle of weeds, unlike most people this wasn't an allotment let go it's a totally new site that used to be wasteland. The soil seems decent, well the weeds like it and the bricks and the beer bottles etc. Anyway in the past I've only gone the container on the patio route, potatoes, tomatoes, beans, radishes etc have done really well. So I was thinking of going the raised bed route and came across a copy of Square Foot Gardening at my local book cycle, I was wondering as anybody gone with this planting idea? I'm also interested in planting by the moon and signs of the zodiac, so as anyone gone down this path?

    Any help is much appreciated.

Hi, welcome. Quite a few people have given lunar planting a go on this site. If you g00gle something like

      Code:
      lunar planting site:http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/grapevine/
you'll find lots of experience to read through. It's not for me, though.

Thanks for the welcomes and pointers, I've wanted to grow for years but never had the space. So why I've been waiting for space I've been reading up on stuff, the square foot is recent but the moon and zodiac have interested me for a bit now but just with a few pots it's been a very small experiment.

I did plant my potatoes on a full moon this year and they seemed to crop a little better, however I never weigh them so it was just an estimate. With little to nothing on tv most days and the nights drawing in it's becoming an hobby.

My views on lunar planting have been expressed, but so i am not talking out of my hat I did an experiment this year with 4 raised beds. One I religiously stuck to lunar planting, one had a photograph of Chairman Moa at the end, one had a picture of Monty Don and the last one had a picture of Caroll Vorderman. The results were unexpeted, the Carol Vorderman bed out grew all the others spectacularly. My wife however was not surprised, she said "Thats because you spent all your time on your knees weeding that bed"
