Is there anything I can sow now?

Hi,

I picked up my keys for my new allotment on Friday - YIPPEE! We've already made a good start with the change in the weather this weekend (just for me I think , I'd've been gutted if it had been rainy) and have cleared a couple of beds.

My question is - Is there anything I can sow now? I've popped in some left over pumpkins, butternut squash and cucumber, and I thought about sowing a few rows of carrots for a late crop. But what else? I know I can cover the beds up or sow green manure, but I'd really like to grow some fruit/veg on my plot this season if I can squeeze it in!

Peas, lettuce and radishes are worth a try. Also begin sowing and planting spring cabbages and the like for next year. Fruit bushes (pot grown) can go in now and I'd pop down to the garden centre to have a look for them and any herbs that take your fancy. How about a grapevine down the side of your plot?

today i plan to sow kohl rabbi, carrot, beeroot, peas, a couple of courgette seeds, saladini, french beans, swiss chard, radish and broccoli raab plus turnips for greens.
you could also try some oriental veg like pak choi or choi sum. very tasty i've been told but can't say myself as slugs ate all mine

I'm about to sow peas, borlotti beans, kohl rabi, kale and PSB for the winter, spring cabbages and more lettuce. What about leeks? I've got some in modules waiting for the maincrop spuds to come out. Leaf beet seems not to care too much about when it's sown.

I got my lottie this time last year.
What worked: lettuce, leaf beet, leeks, courgette, french beans
What didn't: brassicas (flea beetle and pigeons), peppers (too late in sowing so didn't ripen), tomatoes (blight, but fantastic for about a week before they all keeled over) sweetcorn,

I put in some sweetcorn plants, squash plants and French dwarf been seeds this morning. This afteroon I'm going to try some late sowings of courgette.

Yes Chrissie, you'll get a crop later on. Many people like to grow a second lot becasue the first tend to run out of steam a bit. I've just sown a couple more plants in 3" pots.

Thanks everyone, I've got a fair few packets of the seeds you've mentioned so I'll have a go with those.

I've had such a lovely weekend, we've dug weeded, sowed and planted 3 beds so far and it's looking good already (all 1/10th of it! ). One lady gave me 2 brussel sprouts and loads of baby cabbage, and the site manager said if I put up some canes he'll bring me some kidney beans. I love the whole experience so far!

I do hope everyone enjoyed the rare chance (seems like it's been raining for months without stopping) to tend their plots in the sunshine!

PS Serenity, slugs/snails did exactly the same with my oriental mixed salad. I came out one day and I had masses of seedlings, came to look 2 days later and all but three lonely seedlings had vanished! Grrrr!

We've only just planted out the sunflowers oh well, fingers crossed!

Planted out the rest of the broccoli, peas and beans too today.

I'll be planting out some turnips and swede as soon as I have a bed ready for them! Oh and more carrots. Might risk a couple more rows of parsnip too, although the more of my plot I dig, the more pebble I find (and concrete and windows and trainers, and t-shirts....), not sure how much pebbles will effect parsnips and carrots!?!
