  • tomato blight?

The site agent told me yesterday that there is tomatoe and potatoe blight going around.

I went and checked mine and one of the plants has thick browny/black stripes running all the way up it stalk. I just thought that this was it's mormal pattern? Could it be? I don't want to loose all of my tomatoes

I bought it from haskins, so it should be a good one, and it is one of the golden yellow varieties? Not sure if that makes a difference or not?

I keep meaning to take my camera with me, but always forget!!

    Am I worrying for nothing?

There is a lot of blight around chrissie, my pots and toms have all got it and i've not been able to sort it out so that's that probably. Some toms do have markings so a photo would help, although blight usually starts with the leaves. If it is then take off the affected leaves and spray with bordeaux (from Haskins or B&Q). It won't cure it but should slow it down.

If all else fails pick toms, cut off affected areas and make my special green tomato chutney (see season to taste). It's that or freeze them.

Simple question: what causes blight? is it the weather or a bug or what? or a combination? Bernie

Blight is a disease that strikes in warm humid conditions Bernie. It is a fungus (Phytophthora infestans) and normal hits later in the year but with it being so wet.

My tomatoes have it too. The ones I grew myself from seed [latah] don't seem so bad, but the ones a newighbour gave me, Marmande and a plum one, seemed quite affected and I pulled them up. Now I wish I had waited a while to be sure. The Latahs are still growing. The potatoes seem OK. Dug out a grow bag of Charlottes today and they were fine. I wonder if I should go on spraying? But they say there is MORE rain on the way..... Is it worth it?
