  • Composting toilet

After a meeting of association members it was agreed that the committee look into the possibility of getting funding for the installation of a composting toilet(s).
Anyone on here have one of these on their allotment? Just looking for any problems, costs etc. Also which make and model installed.
We will be contacting the usual funding groups and the local council for aid.

Depends a lot on your site and where you are planning on putting it. We have a wildish wooded area on our site, which also houses our loo. It's a long-drop style - shed on stilts with willow modesty screening hiding what lies beneath...It composts naturally, sawdust thrown down after. It's been up for nearly 5 years and hasn't needed emptying, has minimal/no smell and can't be seen from outside the woods for most of the year. But we did have to get planning permission and it apparently took a while (before my time). Nearest residential property is 70-80m to the south, otherwise none.

Send HansMum a PM, they have one on her site. I never used it when I had my plot, to be honest I never heard of anyone using it. She may be able to confirm if they are good value for money or not.

My biggest concern is who would keep it clean as most of my experiences of shared toilets (composting or otherwise) are a bit grim. I just use a bucket in my shed hitch works well for me

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I would love it if there was a loo on our site, but it's a very small site, and most plotholders are a short stroll from their house. Not so me - I've had a couple of very dodgy quick drives home.....

Our compost loo was home made. Basically a sawdust bucket that gets emptied into compost bins.
