We have a plot on our site which is hard to let. I can see its potential but it will take a lot of work.
I am thinking about giving up one of my 3/4 plots which is shaded by a neighbouring tree and taking over this hard to let full plot. I would hope to pull it into shape in a year and eventually give up my other 3/4 plot as well giving me only one full plot next year.
This new plot is derelict and covered with broken down buildings, metal sheeting, glass and buttercups. What it HAS, is loads of 8X4 lumps of semi rotten 3/4 inch plywood. There is enough to cover the whole plot with plywood.
I had the idea of creating a plywood mulch to keep the buttercups down and drill through four inch holes with a hole saw at two foot spacings. I would plant the whole plot with tatties through the holes! This would hopefully tidy the plot up, give me a crop of spuds and help to eradicate the buttercups in a single season.

It should also give me time to build a new chicken run and coop, move my spare greenhouse and polytunnel on to the site and generally get rid of the rubbish.

Am I mad?.........no don't answer that!

Buttercups thrive in acidic soil, so a dose of lime will help reduce their vigour. (That gem comes from my horsey years - grazing horses eat up the calcium by way of the grass and return acidic compounds to the ground and then buttercups and docks flourish and spread rampantly).

Don't forget the piccies of your plywood mulch! Just one thought - would there be any chemicals in the plywood that you might not want to let loose in the soil?

Just think Jason's plot.........but worse! Even Jason wasn't prepared to take this one on!

I think the chemicals in the plywood would be the least of my worries when you see the other junk that's on the plot!

If your able to cope with it,then good luck,go for it,could the ground be good after clearing it,due to it standing doing its own thing for a while,like fallow,you got more patience than me,wanting to plant spudz in a small round hole,i remember 2 sheds saying about covering with wood/fence panels as a weed stopper.

The thing is..........I retire to my to my project house in three years time when I will need to give up my allotments.
I will be living 25 miles away and its a bit to far to travel!
