Let the jubiliations ring! After 1 year and two months of cultivation, my previously-uncultivated-for-decades plot is finally growing.... wait for it.... ANNUAL WEEDS!!!!!

I'm so happy. A bright future where I'm actually able to compost my weedings rather than cart them off to the dump beckons....

Since the plot has mostly produced docks, couch grass, mares tail and bindweed, I am genuinely ecstatic to see soft little annuals poking up their head.

But not so ecstatic that I'm not reaching for the hoe. ;-)

Great news, now get some plants in there or even green manure to maintain the soil or mulch it with card/compost/grassclippings etc.

I must admit, the way the weeds and slugs are this year a couple of beds of early green manure is looking to be on the cards.

I keep all my weeds and compost them as appropriate. All the docks and dandelions get put into old compost bags and left with a brick on top for a suitable amount of time. At least a year. They break down into compost eventually and don't risk contaminating a slow compost bin.

Horsey manure makes life interesting! I've got weeds now that I've never seen before and are hard to identify!:eek
The addition of organic material to the land and the fertility it adds outweighs the problems with weeds.............and as has already been mentioned, they hold water at the roots and make a good green manure!
