  • Choosing an allotment plot

    Hi Guys

After being on the waiting list for a year Ive been invited down to my local allotments (along with others I assume) to take over some spare plots

Im unsure how much choice I will have in choosing a plot (there are about a dozen or so spare that will be handed over on the day) so If I do get a choice what should I look out for as a priority?

just to add I imagine they will all be overgrown and that is the reason the council has taken them back

Hi. I would try and get down earlier or on the day prior if possible to chat to any on the current holders to get a little bit of an inside info on the plots available. Even if the plots are over grown there is still plenty of time to either get on top of the plots in stages, or if you haven't got the time, to cover most of the plot in polythene so it does off for next season whilst concentrating on a smaller area of the plot.

I would also look at where the water access is in relation to the plots, and if any are slightly more secure from a thieving perspective. Mine is a back plot right at the rear of the site so is a prime target for thieves, as I learned recently when they took my children's chairs the first week of having them on the plot. My fault, but I live and learn.

Either way, good luck and congrats

On top of what Nick has said, if you have to make a relatively quick decision, my 1st priority would be an open plot without any shading trees or structures. Everything else you can work with, you can't change where the sun rises & sets.

        Thanks guys

The site is pretty large, over 100 plots

So im thinking If I have to make a quick decision If I can get a plot in the centre away from any possible shade and thats probably also best from a theft point of view.

On the watering front there are standpipes around the site but not on each plot.

All about proximity to water for me...

Some sites have an organic end and a non organic end (Which is a great idea because I once had to give up a plot because I was gardening next door to chemical Ali )

Oh! and a chat with other plotholders before hand might inform you of any unsociable neighbours to avoid!

Remember if the weeds are growing well that the soil is good.
Look to see what mare’s tail looks like and if a plot has it look for another that has not hot it

also look for wind direction! the wind in this country comes predomantley from the west so try to get a plot that's fairly sheltered (wind blown weed seeds , disease like blight ,and batered plants) it will be a good bit warmer and help your plants to get off to a better start .

all the best and good luck .Dal
