pathways at allotments

Hi All

I am thinking of changing my pathways at my allotment. We presently use bits of carpet but it not working that well. Can anyone recommend a CHEAP way to make paths to keep the weeds away and make the lottie site a bit more attractive. Having carpet makes it look a little untidy

We mow our grassed pathways every 2 weeks.

I dug the grass out(as turf) of my and my neighbour's allotment and used as paths where there was none the rest I left in when I acquired the it 2 years ago. I acquired some slabs from my mother and laid as the main path down the centre.I I have over 300' of paths Cost? Free!!!

I mow my paths with my push(£30) mower, good exercise, looks very nice, and no pests under carpets etc.

Our council composts most of their vegetable & garden waste collected from residents which they sell.

Try contactong a local tree surgeon, we have one who drops off wood chippings for free!

Only trouble with wood chippings is that they tend to grow mushrooms (or fungi of some sort). And I think you would probably have to put some sort of membrane or plastic underneath.

I use cardboard, but that's no prettier than carpet.

We've left ours as grass so far, and we're cutting it with the strimmer every couple of weeks. It looks fine, the downfall is that if there's couch or something in the paths, it does spread sideways into the beds...

I got hold of a load of old plastic sheet, layed it in between my beds, then covered it with wood chippings provided by the council at the cost of a phone call!

I was thinking of letting the grass grow BUT I am worried the weeds will grow instead - Weeds grow very well on my plot. If my veg grew aswell as the weeds I could open my own shop :-)

I'm thinking about using the cuttings from my hedges, chopped up, on top of the cardboard mulch. I have a lot of hedges!

I would never use carpets for paths, the dye used in them can contain toxins which can seep into the soil over time.

I would go to poundland, get loads of rolls of 6x2 weed suppressant and lay this. Cover it at will, my preferred is bark chippings which get dumped at my lottie site now and then by a local farmer.
