  • Soft tomatoes

Picking some of my tomatoes today and noticed that they had gone soft. Last time I picked was a week or so ago and everything was fine. Any ideas what's causing this?

    Overripe?
This time of year you need to pick every couple of days.

Rather than "overripe" I would suggest they are "well ripe". I agree that at the moment one needs to be picking more than once a week but personally I find that some varieties (particularly beefsteak) taste better when they're soft to the touch.

Cherry varieties certainly shouldn't be allowed to get to that state.

Maybe "well ripe" is the opposite of "unwell ripe" when the tomatoes are squidgy and burst on picking?
          I dunno

I made it up. I don't think they are overripe just because they are soft, as I suggested, some tomatoes taste better when they are soft so those are ripe but not overripe. How would you describe it?

            Maybe just "ripe".

They're underripe when they don't taste nice, ripe when they're nice and overripe when they're horrid (again).

Ahh, so I'm not going 'gahgah' then You should also factor into your thoughts on 'ripeness' is the tomato to be eaten raw or cooked, while a beefsteak may be better in a salad when 'overripe' it is certainly better for cooking as 'a stuffed tomato' when ripe, using a personal perception of ripeness without clarification is not easy for other readers to understand
