Hello on the day I got my allotment

I just wanted to say hello and to let the world know that I have been offered an allotment. Still got to get the official paperwork through but have been to site, met the council officer and agreed the plot. I've been on our local waiting list for a could of years (another 5 years to wait apparently) but someone called today to tell me there was a choice of vacant plots in the next village along (about 5 miles away). As I Would have to use the car to get to the local plots anyway, another 3 miles won't break the bank, and it does cut out 5 years of waiting.

Sorry for rambling on but I'm quite excited about getting my allotment. I'm site I'll be back on here soon asking loads of questions.

Thanks for the welcome. I started at the tender age of 4 or 5 in my Dad's garden. I was 'allowed' to grow the radishes and spring onions. I was NOT allowed to pick and eat the peas but I did anyway. I worked weekends and school holidays in an old fashioned plant nursery (no such thing as garden centres back then) for 3 years, sowing and pricking out seedlings, budding roses and grafting apple trees etc. I worked for the old ICI Plant Protection company for 9 years and did the electrical work in their commercial greenhouses and apple orchards; so I've been around growers even if I didn't do much myself. I've had a couple of gardens since and grown a few veg but only really got the bug again a few years back. I grow a row of spuds, runners and courgettes at home with toms in a small greenhouse but i want to grow on a slightly larger scale so I can have more varieties.

The allotment I've been offered is just big enough to do a decent rotation, without being so big it would be unmanageable. I'll post pics and plan soon.

Thanks for the welcome. I doubt if I'll be able to give anyone any advice, though, working as an electrical technician on a commercial growing station (almost 30 years ago) is a world away from gardening or an allotment.

Hopefully, on my allotment, I won't be perched in one of the apexes of a half acre glass house in a thunderstorm whilst watching lightening dancing around the framework. Or stuck in a plastic strawberry tunnel, in the middle of summer, trying to fix the vent motor - while the strawberries are over-ripening all around. I've never been able to forget the smell and I couldn't bring myself to eat strawberries for nearly 20 years after.

Welcome to the forum. We started our allotment 2 years ago and have never looked back since. Its hard work but do take before and after photos as these are a must to look back on, to see how well you have done and give yourself a pat on the back. Getting your first harvest is probably the happiest moment and saying to yourself I did that. A bit like having your first child
