Thanks for all the welcoming comments.

Jay-ell - well spotted on the blue bucket, but I'm afraid it belongs to my neighbour. So does that mean I have to go out and find a blue bucket to really complete my allotment ?
Also thanks for the heads up on the position of the compost, I was thinking of placing it at that spot next to the shed, so it take it that is a very bad idea?

Compost heaps can attract flies and rats and fresh material can be a bit whiffy until it rots down. Maybe not something you want next to your shed if you can help it.

What Mr Bones said plus if the compost leans on the shed then the shed will rot away quicker. I haveg my compost bins away from my sheds - in fact they are moveable and usually sit on a bed so that the leechant gets snaffled up by whatever is growing in that bed. I move them each season and the bed ends up with a fair amount of goodness added although it mean for one season whatever's growing in that bed has less growing space.

You don't necessarily need a compost bin - you can chop and drop, using the compostable material as a mulch over the beds where it will break down - although I don't do this method.

Welcome to the vine. I am also a very new allotmenteer still getting to grasp with the daunting task ahead of me. Your plot looks good and I'm sure you'll make it a great success.

              Virgin Allotmentier update.

Hi everyone, just thought I would post a wee update on my progress. Have been able to blag 17 pallets to renew fence and build a compost container, a green house from an other allotmentier in Sir J M Allotments, replacement glass for the green house and some cheap tools from a car boot sale.
Was hoping to have had the fence down by now but discovered my shed floorboards where completely rotted, so have been learning about joists and the importance of measuring twice before cutting

As for the plot, it was covered in Mares tail so I spent far too long researching and quizzing people about solutions(thought I was going mad)! I finally thought I would give Kurtail a go and this will be three weeks since I sprayed it. So far the weed is black and crumbly, will see what effect it will have had on the roots when it dig it up and next year if it comes back.

Rest of this week will be finishing laying the floor in the shed, laying new roof felt, moving the green house to its new home and starting to dig the weeds up.

My better half is a teacher and she is off for October break, guess where she will be spending some of her time this week...?

              Will post photos later.
