Winter onions

Hi
Anyone tried growing winter onions?if so. How did you get on?

Mine were badly hit by allium miner this year so probably won't plant them again. In the past I've found overwintering onions a useful gap-filler, they don't store well but are useful as a pick and use as you need it crop.

Winter onions

Im new to all this,so im kinda trying everything. Growing wise.il plant some and see what happens.

I got on really well with my first red onions,the birds pulled one out so I had to cover them up with a bit of netting. They're storing well in my shed with my garlic. Definitely grow them every year,it's nice not having to buy any veg from the shops. The allium miner hasn't found my little garden plot,yet!

Grew from seed last year and had a good crop, this year very poor germination so thinking about getting some sets and putting them in modules in the greenhouse to over winter then get them in the ground to continue early spring.

I've grown them the last couple of years and they've done well. I'm growing Senshyu Yellow from seeds and also putting in Troy and Electric sets as well as Golden Gourmet shallots . Troy were good last year - pity you can't get seed, only sets.

I keep thinking is it worth it as they only mature a month or so earlier than spring sown and they don't store as long - but in the end I've planted them anyway . Next year I might not though - who knows.

Just ordered some "Radar". Have had good success with over winter onions in the last couple of years. Gets you early onions to pick May/June.

Do winter onions suffer from whiterot?

I've got whiterot on most (if not all) of my allotment and its stopped me growing onions (and garlic).

I grew a couple of rows of white last year that was fabulous in the back garden only shame being that we ate them up so quick, have planted 4 varieties two yellow and two red in the allotment this year fingers crossed they go as well. I did net them as allotmenter suggested due to birds picking, good luck...

Unfortunately yes - white rot becomes active in the spring once the soil warms up a bit but before the bulbs have swollen,
