  • Scattering the ashes...

    Hi All,

I recently burned a load of old wood, prunings, and dried out weeds in my new dustbin incinerator thing. Now it has about 6" of ashes in the bottom, so I'm wondering where best to scatter these - I know they can be good for the soil, but i'm unsure for which crops (brassicas?), and how much to add, and whether to scatter around established crops or rake into empty beds... I'm also thinking of adding some to my compost bins.

    Any advice?

    Thanks.

Wood ashes are alkaline so can affect the PH of the soil. Anywhere where you would lime they would be fine. Elsewhere you can put on a little at a time to let the potassium and calcium get incorporated into the soil and the PH to come back down.

    Fruit will like the potassium

The soil here is generally quite acid... so a little everywhere, and a bit more round fruit bushes and brassicas?

I'm going to try and sort out a storage bin to keep mine in so I can apply the ash through the year when they need it rather than now and having the nutrients leech out too soon.

Remember to riddle out the nails otherwise you may skewer yourself with a rusty nail in the future.

I'm not sure about using ash on blueberry bushes as they need it acid
