  • Are my artichokes dead?

Last year I planted 6 globe artichoke plants from a mixture of seed grown and store brought plugs.
They did very well and in the autumn as the died back I cut them back to ground level and mulched them. There are no signs of life yet but other plots' plants are growing well. Am I being overly pessimistic?

Funnily enough, I noticed today that my 2 plants haven't put in an appearance yet, I hope they are just being lazy!

But..... just in case, I've sown some Purple of Provence, so I shouldn't be without any even if the Green Globes have snuffed it

      It is still only March.
If you see no signs of life by the end of april, start to worry.
Feed the soil, not the plants.

Just wait and see, it's still early. Fingers crossed for you.

Are you sure the ones growing on other plots aren't actually cardoons?

They may be. It looks like some of them never completely died back over winter?
