What to sow now?

So I have another half plot (hurray!) - at least I will once I've cleared the nettles and mint from it...! I'm planning autumn onion sets, broad beans and garlic later on in October/November.

Is there anything I can usefully sow right now? I already have enough salads on the go. I bought some green manure so if I can't plant anything new until November, at least the soil won't be bare. Is it too late for carrots?

Hi Birdie Wife - welcome back
The RHS for July advise:-

Sow spring cabbage, turnips, Oriental vegetables, chicory, fennel, and autumn/winter salads.

Carrots can still be sown, but beware of carrot fly when thinning existing seedlings.

Last chance to sow French beans and runner beans (south of England only).

Plant out leeks and brassicas for a winter supply, if not yet done.

I got a few catalogues and thought I'd give the following a go: kohl rabi, spring onions, carrots, beetroot, a few different salads. I ordered onions, garlic and shallots for later planting. I also got some cabbage seeds for spring greens free with a mag (not GYO - shhh!) so I'm going to sow some in modules and transplant next month.

I got those too I'll be starting them off on Tuesday when I get paid and can get some compost.

This year has been a washout as far as growing anything is concerned as a number of things have conspired to get in my way (long working hours, crippling depression, hubby not working so lack of funds etc) so the plot has mostly been full of flowers instead of crops. Things are better now though so I'm getting on with planning my growing for the next few months and next year

You're even further north than me, not sure there's enough light left to get a crop this side of the winter.Baby carrots, early cropping ones might work, you might need to cover them with fleece, that'll sort out any late flies and keep the soil warm too.

In addition to the suggestions already made might be worth asking around to see if anybody has a few spare plants of cabbage, purple sprouting, leeks etc that you could cadge, and plant out now.
