    Hello

    https://www.facebook.com/Allotmentmaryfern/

I've taken on my 2nd allotment with my mum, in Ely, Cambridgeshire.

Luckily, no waiting list. The allotment has lain dormant for at least a year. We won't be charged for this year, and £26 thereafter. Its a 15 min cycle ride or 6 min car journey.

The 2nd from most recent owner was a landscape gardener, and there are some trees I'd like to tame.

The most recent owner sadly was a young ill lad, who from my findings of his rubbish dump was an addict to diet coke, liquid codeine, nicotine and sleep tablets.

The plot is mainly covered in nettles. It does have big swaves of blcak weed membrane, but with 3 inches of soil on top, and plenty of nettles and couch grass that have breached it. Lots of new carpets. I want to roundup the weeds, mum doesn't. Previous allotment I didn't and wished I did.

I keep telling myself that this month is the highest the weeds will be. The road verges are also rampant.

Luckily the plot comes with a polytunnel (In need of some repairs), little holes in the roof, and 1 door needs reattaching. A shed, that needs some love, a table, an IBC water tank, some blue barrels, shed guttering, and some meaty fence posts.

I need to address the perimeter with one neighbour, as I feel terrible about encrouching weeds. I'm sure they are relieved that we are addressing the site.

The size is 5m wide by 50m long. I'm planning of having one long path along the long perimeter, and then can work in narrow ways. I need to empty the compost heaps as they are full of weeds.

Here are some photos. I've started to clear the first 5m or so, and did three trips to the dump with green waste. I can only half load a tonne bag into the car by myself.

      Hi
Etherelda and welcome to the vine.

You’re obviously getting stuck in and clearing it bit by bit. Carpet buried black plastic, coke can mountain - the joys of a new allotment. Do you have a pile of newspaper and cardboard you can lay down on the cleared bits until you're ready to plant?

Looks as it it came with some nice usable stuff on it - any other useful plants - fruit bushes etc? What are the trees on the plot?

Can you not pack the weeds into a tonne bag or something and cover them till they rot down? Save carting them away and taking their nutrients with them.Once the bag is full use a sturdy bit of wood to bash them down and compress them every now and then - you'll be surprised how much they reduce and how much you can get into them.
