  • Celery growing?

Was thinking about growing celery next year but a bit put off by what I've read so far. Anyone had success with celery? Any tips?

Found this https://www.quickcrop.co.uk/learning/plant/celery which gives me some encouragement. Most sites are saying that celery us very difficult to grow.

I've found it very difficult - managed to grow on some from supermarket bought 'roots' - well sort of - but had no success with celery really. Celeriac is easier I think - though its not a like for like replacement once you've got it to the kitchen

The modern self blanching varieties are easy to grow.
Plenty of manure & water & 9" apart in blocks, not rows.
If they do get short of water they tend to get a bit stringy (fibrous).
Feed the soil, not the plants.

Ok will do a bit of reading up on "self blanching" and give it a go next year.

I grow self blanching celery. Never let them dry out I use soaker pots (there is a very old thread which explains them). I have never managed huge heads but they do fine.

I grew some self blanching years ago and the kids Guinea pigs got the lot, I intend to have a go at growing proper trench celery once, just to see how I get on, might be next year.

I've grown trench celery, (slugs got it) self blanching (ran to seed) and Celariac (size of golf balls).

Last year I grew Kintsai leaf celery and I finally managed to get that celery tatse I enjoy. Two or three leaves in a broth gave the required taste.

This year I've grown leaf celery but its still in modules waiting to be planted out.

I must get it planted this week.

I may grow a couple in pots in the summerhouse to extend the cutting season.

I guess I could use one of my raised beds, but it would take up the whole bed, that's a big investment if it goes wrong, though I could put winter cabbage in later I suppose.

Trench celery is a bit of an effort but the celery is excellent in a good year.....you'd never go self blanching once tasted!

Celtuce was another that went to the kids pets, that was the least celery like, so called celery tasting plant I've ever eaten.

Had another go this year again.
It looks like celery, the stalks are thin and whispy but the taste is very intense. They don't look like shop bought but moderate success is probably down to the large amounts of rain this year late into summer.

I had my first go at Celery this year only just started to get to the 8in level this last week, pulled a few stalks for Risotto very intense flavour almost slightly salty very thin stalks so far, it is a self blanching type.
