I usually plant my winter onions in October. Couple of beds cleared and ready for planting, is it too early ? Would it make any difference to plant this early

You could sow seeds of overwintering varieties now. But presumably you're talking about sets that are usually planted later.

Yes I'm talking about sets. They are on sale at moment.

Must have a trip to the GC tomorrow then!

You don't want too much soft top growth going into the winter but late September should be fine I would think?

..............as a follow on. I visited the GC which didn't have any Japanese onion sets. They did however have Senshyu onion plantlets in modules. 40 plants for less than the price of a packet of seeds can't be bad!

I bought some of these but will still get some sets once they arrive.
