New Allotment!

I've just got the keys to my new allotment plot, it's only small at around 8 metres x 10 metres, but plenty big enough to get me started.

I'll pop there on Friday afternoon and take some photos, it's a bit neglected and overgrown, but nothing a good weekend sorting it out wont fix!

If I can't upload the photos here, i'll just search for a Facebook group instead

I'll keep this thread updated to show my progress over the winter months getting it ready for next spring!

We'd love to see the photos, both before and after you've got your new plot licked in to shape.

Be sure to take your time enough that you enjoy it - even after a year's practice I still have to limit myself to half a day's digging at once if I want to be able to stand up straight the next day!

Allotment Photos - September 2017







My area is within the thick black lines (which I crudely added using Microsoft Paint, it's a bit easier to see my patch that way rather than the background of other plots which seem to merge in on the photos). I also inherited a large plum tree and a raspberry bush.

The worst area is in one of the corners which has been used as a dumping ground for rubbish and bits of wood; for some reason the photo I took of it didn't come out, so I'll try and get down there for a photo of that corner (for completeness of the whole plot).

I measured my area and it's 7.3 metres x 8.5 metres (2.5 square rods for the older generation ) a quarter plot.

I met a few more people down the allotment over the weekend and they all seemed really nice; I'm looking forward to turning my patch into something less weedy and a bit tidier; I have OCD and relish the challenge!!

That looks a great space! Do you know what you want to grow? I started off trying to grow everything I could think of.. I'm streamlining now into things I actually like (ahem and that I can actually grow!). This site is brilliant for excellent friendly advice, I'm a new-ish grower and it's a goldmine..

that looks to be in pretty good shape for this time of year (OCD aside). It won't take long to get 80% of that fit and ready and you can be more comfortable with the last 20% at your leisure bearing in mind the growing season is now limited and you are mainly prepping for spring. If you clean and dig the soil now you need to cover it either with green manure, weed fabric or cardboard to prevent a mass germination of weeds and keep it ready for planting.
