I went up there for an hour tonight. Those tall things in the photo are nettles
Underneath are brambles and ivy. Someone has kindly dumped a load of blackthorn prunings on there too - I went through one pair of "thornproof" gloves today.

I'm going to take it slowly - cut down the topgrowth, burn that, then mulch with carpet to kill off some roots, then dig it over. Slowly!

My OH and I have got 3 lotties between the two if us, and I did wonder if we'd taken too much on, but it is definitely do-able if you plan low maintenance crops. (One of ours we're trying to make into a mini-orchard so it's quite easy to maintain).

On the subject of carpet, I've heard from readers that when the backing breaks down it can leak toxic chemicals into the soil and apparently it's banned on some allotments. If that puts you off, there are always the options of black plastic or cardboard plus a layer of manure?

My oh just climbs into the compost heap and checks the moisture content there, no bucket to rinse out see.

Our allotment site has banned carpet. Mostly because its such a bastard to remove if its been down for a season or two. Stuff just grows through it as it breaks down. Its the biggest bane when clearing plots to let.

Yeah, old carpet with Bindweed growing thru it is the pits.
I haven't found any on my plot yet...apparently the previous tenant was a carpet fitter and he rented his plot in order to burn all his remnants.
We had a good 3 hrs hacking down the dry stuff - hoping for a dry weekend so we can burn it now.
