  • Glum in Henley-on-Thames

After leaving loads of messages in response to an ad that was placed locally I've finally been told all the allotments in Henley are taken. Didn't even give me any advice on how to get on a waiting list. Off to the council today to see if they're any friendlier.

Why's it so hard? I just want to grow veggies!

Oh Doggler what a shame - and what bad manners too! Do hope you find something soon!

Bad luck but don't give up - keep on at the Council and console yourself with the knowledge that you live in one of the few places in Englandshire that I actually quite liked when I was staying down there

Keep looking Doggler It's there for you but you may have to search Consolation - by the time you find it you will have learned so much more. Happy gardening and keep us posted.

You're right, Alice. I am learning so much this year and treating it as a bit of an experiment in a way. Sure I've made a few mistakes but it's all part of the fun really. The garden is looking fantastic now, really gives me a huge sense of achievement and even the OH is starting to take an interest

Doggler go to www.nsalg.demon.co.uk and click on There Are No Allotments In My Area What Can I Do? All the information you will need is there.

                    Yep, sure is Doggler.

The Smallholding & Allotments act 1908, section 23

A local authority has a duty to provide "a sufficient number of allotments if they are of the opinion that there is a demand for them - and then goes on to say that is 6 ratepayers of an area where there was no existingallotment provision, wrote to the local authority asking for an allotment then the authority would be obliged totake preceedings for allotment provision and the council shall take such representations into consideration except for the 12 bouroughs of inner London

                      Not so glum now!

Just had a call about an allotment! Haven't seen it yet but apparently it "needs some work". Will keep you all posted and no doubt have lots of questions. Typical timing, I've just taken a load of spent compost from my pots up to the local tip!

                        great news dogger!
i was going to suggest you take a good walk around your local area for any apparent waste ground, there is an area near us that used to be a playground that got vandelised so they removed it and its just crying out to be dug, i know somone who got a lottie this way, the council had just forgotten it was there.

                        take only what you need
                        give all you can
and your produce will be bountifull

Great news Doggler, welcome to the lottie owners club

                            Pics of the new lottie!

Went to see the new lottie the other night. It's a bit overgrown but the soil underneath looks pretty good. See the pics! Just borrowed a strimmer and once it's rotovated I reckon we might even get some veg in. The OH is even keen to help, although I think it's a man and machine thing.

Looks OK to me Doggler. Just read all the threads that we've done for newbie owners & put it into practice. I'm dying to see if I've been telling folks right all this time

You've got Rhubarb as well - best rearch for the scnapps recipe as well
