alottment buddy

was wondering if you all think this is a good idea,i live in east yorkshire in a village parish called rawcliffe.there are no allotments to rent from council as they are all privately owned,do you think if i advertised for an allotment buddy to share an allotment with this would work, and advertise to see if any of the privatley owned allotments are rentable? i would dearly love an allotment,but i work full time and feel that i could buddy up with someone else in the same position, please let me know your thoughts on this

I think its a great idea. I'm on the list for a lottie at the moment but I'd be happy with even just half a plot or even better, the opportunity to share a plot with someone perhaps more experienced than me that might be finding it hard to all the work themselves. Good luck!!

Sounds like a good plan. Our allotments are privately-run (although the land belongs to the council), and I got myself a one-third plot within the space of a week by just contacting the secretary directly. I would have had to wait 2-3 years if I'd gone through a council waiting list!

That sounds like a good idea. Might contact the allotments here to see if that will help my cause also. When i went on the list last september I was number 56.. Curious now to see if I am up the list at all.

I think it would end in tears. how would you share the produce, there would always be the resentment that they or you had taken more than your share or the best bits.

Or you could have half the plot each NOG. No problem there I would have thought.

JO, JO - Just what I (will be) doing!

Viewed a potential site, then ran around like a headless chicken shouting: "Who wants to share a lottie with me?"
Figures that one of my mates had been thinking about one for a while. We are now planning world domination together.

My main reason and concern was that I am starting a new job soon. More responsibilities mean that I can be expected to travel for up to a month at a time, which wouldn't be good for a lottie. But otherwise I have quite a short working week with plenty of time. Also - between us we have plenty of enthusiastic friends who can be bribed into helping out (in return for a pint or BBQ).

NOG - is a risk - but as flummery said - A plot can be halved!

Sharing a plot must be better than having none at all, and any experience would be worthwhile.
Remember that an allotment is not just for growing veg, it is somewhere to escape from the rat - race, drink a can or two, and watch your plants grow(or not, if you're anything like me)
There's nothing to stop you still being on the waiting list for a full sized plot in the meantime

I too am on a 3 year waiting list (number 45) but through a friend of my oh's dad I may potentially have a section of my own on someone elses plot. He cant receive any money from me (sublet) so i will help him out on his part in return as he has been receiving letters from council because its abit untidy & weedy. I hope it works out for you and me!

if your ok for travelling theres some free in old goole and maybe some in goole but if you cant get sorted i'll share till you get one

i started as a buddly last year for a lovely old lady she gave me on third of her plot and i helped her on the rest of hers, within six months she gave me another 3rd cos she could see i was serious and not just a nine day wonder then in jan of this year she gave it up altogether but asked if i wanted to take it over, the council were in agreement sed id kept it in vgc and because it had already been paid for the year i havent got to pay till next jan which is cool.its officially mine on 1st sept.by the way here in grimsby they cant give allotments away our site has lots of empty plots and there very overgrown which means theyve been vacant for years.were getting a few more people now but most of the chaps have been on site for thirty or more years.!!!!! im surounded by men but "am i bovvered" lol

Although I got my new lottie, my friend is going to share it with me too, as a whole plot not split into two. The thought of trying to get two separate rotations working makes my head hurt. I'm not worried about arguements etc as we know each other well and work well together but am guessing that it could be a problem with somebody you didn't know.
