  • Allotments in Suffolk-any advice???

    Hi all!

i'm trying to find an allotment in Bury St Edmunds. The council has three sites, I have contacted them but I still haven't heard anything. I don't know if there are any private sites. I've not lived here long enough to know the area that well.

Is there anyone out there from the Bury area who could help me?? Or anyone who knows where I could search for a private site?? I'm contemplating finding out where all the green areas are and walking round!

    Any help much appreciated.

Hello! We just now came through Bury on the 497 London coach. Had a tea and a wee in the library, very nice.

I don't think I've ever had a reply when I've enquired about allotments. People can't be bothered to return phone calls or write letters. In each case I have gone there on foot and cornered someone until I got the right one.

Have a look at Google maps for your area (satellite version) and see if you can spot any more allotments that you don't know about.

I found that the way to get on a council site is to talk to those that are there already and note the plot numbers of the vacant plots then TELL the council you will take the one you want.
Try to phone the person at the council, it's harder to ignore.

If you get nowhere then contact a councillor at their surgery and complain like hell. Before I moved here I got a plot and a grant for the site to build a communal manure dump, the councillor even arranged for local riding schools to dump their horse muck there each week for us all to use.

      PS welcome to the vine!

        Hi Nat,

I found mine by looking on Google Maps too, I found my house then scoped around until I found a few (I couldn't believe how many there actually were - I'd driven walked by loads without realising!). I saw on another of your posts that you have a long waiting list, perhaps you can find some private ones? Good luck with your hunt!
