  • Allotment in Kent

Anyone know of allotments available in Canterbury or surronding area?
The greatness comes not when things go always good for you,but the greatness comes when you are really tested, when you take, some knocks, some disappointments;because only if youv'e been in the deepest valley can you ever know how magnificent it is to be on the highest mountain.

I don't know Caterbury at all I'm afraid, so not really very helpful, sorry. We are trying to get some land in Iwade, and have a tentative offer from a farmer, if he can get as much as renting for horses. Still early days but fingers crossed. The parish council have to agree, and there's lots of red tape to go through to get a new site going.
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

Tori, I'm in Ashford too. I've just been allocated a VERY overgrown one on the Jemmet Road site. It might be worth calling the allotments officer to maybe give her a nudge - she was very helpful when I spoke to her. Also, if you go round some of the sites, there are phone numbers of the site reps on some of the signs on various sites - it might be worth ringing that number instead of the council number in case there any people considering giving up their plots or thinking of plot sharing. Often the site reps know stuff like that before the council officer does.

Rooter, you're luckier than you know. There is a blocked culvert behind where you are, and currently all the rain that falls on several streets is running across William Road allotments like a stream. We are flooded, over the tops of wellies in places - the council thought we were exaggerating and/or getting worked up over nothing, told us "It only does it when there's a flash flood". It's been steadily getting worse over the past few years. Fortunately a nice man from a different department is now on the case, (especially as the water is all ending up in the back garden of a nice old lady on William Road) and we hope Southern Water will finally fix it.

There are quite a lot of allotments in Ashford which are neglected and unused - the tenants should really, in all fairness, be evicted but they can be very dog-in-the-manger about land they're not actually using. When plots do come up, Ashford are now splitting them into 2 or 3 so no-one ever gets the size plot they used to. This is, of course, nothing less than rationing. There are about 500 plots in the borough and 280 on the waiting list, so it's clear that even splitting the plots up won't clear the backlog. There are several old sites which are locked up and unused and it would be very sensible to get these brought back into use. I suspect the situation is the same in Canterbury. We have just set up a new website Ashford Allotments - home and hope to address some of these issues soon. If you want to see the website type or copy the address to your address bar as Google isn't picking it up very well yet. We welcome all feedback and suggestions

The waiting list for Orion Way in willesborough is about 2 years, and they seem to change hands fairly quickly now there is a new allotments officer, and there are more inspections per year.

We have had a lot of problems with the noticeboards which are clearly not fir for outdoor use. If you want to know who your site rep is there is a list on the Ashford Allotments (allomenters, not council, website) at forum - Ashford Allotments. It doesn't have the phone numbers on for reasons of probity, but messages can be forwarded via the website 'contact' form and we will ask the rep to ring you if need be.
