Is The Law Different In Scotland ?

I am about to move into the country. I haven't worked out where I am going to live yet (I know the village I need to be in, just not the house) but it is pretty obvious that I need a bigger area to grow my veggies in than I am likely to get.
So I thought I'd get an allotment site started. This is assuming that the legislation that says if six persons put in a petition to the local council saying that they need allotments, then the council must provide them with land, is applicable in Scotland.
Does anyone know if all the legislation passed in the 20s and 50s applies to Scotland as well ? Did Scotland "cut and paste" the legislation into an act of its own ?
Or will I have to rely on my charm and charisma to win the day ?

If it's a rural village (as most rpund Aberdeen are) you may find a local farmer who will rent you the corner of a field. I worked on farme round the Aberdeen area (predominantly north and west of the city) ans may be able to give you some names if you wanna tell me where you're going

I know the names of the local farmers Sewer Rat, the problem is getting the land ! The village is Braemar, so virtually all the land around for many miles is owned by Invercauld Estate - one of the biggest estates in Scotland, if not the biggest. But paradoxically, traditionally really incredibly reluctant to sell even the smallest pocket handkerchief of ground. If I'm lucky the factor will look kindly upon my request, if not....

I've jumped into this conversation, hope that's OK. I'm in Insch and was wondering how well you know people round here? I am part of a group of 15ish who are in the early process of hopefully starting a community gradening thing and we do have some land offers which are great. However my friend who lives outside Huntly and I are also interested in maybe starting something towards Huntly ourselves? (she's north of Huntly, we hope to move that way in three years when last daughter moves that way schoolward.

Do you know anybody out that way?

Have you made enquiries from your local council ? There are certainly plenty of towns in Scotland with allotments.

Forget-Me-Not, I'm afraid virtually all my teuchter pals hail from Aberdeenshire rather than Morayshire, the nearest I could get is a sheep farmer friend in Inverurie ! If you want to tie into like minded people who do self-sustainable/small holding things though, you could do worse than checkout the NEEPS forum (North East Environmental something or other). They have folk up thataways.

I don't know personally Spliff, but having seen a recent edition of Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's programme about Autumn Food, try searching for his Landshare website - .net I think it is - he is trying to get people to match up untended land with wannabe gardeners/ allotmenteers.
