  • Hooray! - Newham

Newham (East London) council sent me an email 22nd April as they were going through their lists and updating to check people were still interested.
I'd been on the list for one allotment for a year or so and was 35th in line for that one back in September.
I confirmed I was still interested and could I be added to the list for the others as well. When I spoke to them in Sept the lists for the other were really long but I thought I may as well get added while they were doing a tidy up.
I figured it would still be at least a year's wait.

Anyhow, they emailled last week and I'm going to look at half a plot on Sunday. This is on one of the other sites I got added to, rather than the one I was originally on.

The lady from the allotment society said they are only offering half plots now as the demand is so great.

It looks like things are moving in Newham and if anyone is in this area, now would probably be a good time to get on to the council while they are reducing the lists and taking off people who are no longer interested.

    Can't wait

This is Folkestone Road, does anyone here have a plot there?

Thats good news...get your seeds out ready.

If its your first plot you need to get on Freecycle for some tools and stuff.

        Cheers
I've already dug up my lawn to grow stuff in so have the tools to get me started.

I've already started converting people: my dad bought some beans "to have a go, won't grow too much, I'm not reknowned for my gardening" Next thing I know he has dug up a a patch of lawn for a vegetable patch and if successful will expand it next year

Is it true that they are going to turn the 2012 stadium into allotments after the event because nobody else wants it?
Why didn't Noah just swat those 2 greenflies?

Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?

I was born in Newham, well it was the County Borough of West Ham (part of Essex then) and used to have an allotment off Ferndale Road. This backed onto the old Becton Gas Works.

I was over there one day when I heard a strange sound, only to see a tank roll past on the other side of the fence, then all hell let loose with explosions and aircraft swooping across. One of the concrete buildings blew up with flames reaching in the air.

Scared the hell out of me, then I saw the camera teams. They were filming "Full Metal Jacket".

Mind you the fake palms were very nice that I spotted further in.

Stopped me going over the fence for a while ferreting for bits for the lottie.

There is a group on line for Newham history, they are very helpful, so you may be able to get some info from them about your parents.
I am certain that the day my boat comes in, I'll be at the airport.

I went and had a look yesterday, the site is very very nice, I'm well impressed. Can't wait to get stuck in!

Apparently that site was earmarked for compulsory sale for the Olympics until about 3 years ago when they decided it wouldn't be, thankfully.
