I've signed too. I can't understand how this can happen "despite the land being given in perpetuity" It makes you wonder what would have happened if the land belonged to the National Turst Land doesn't it?

There is a big non-gardening world out there..

.... and for quite some time the business part of it has been up in arms about long standing businesses located on the Olympic site being turfed off and offered less than the relocation costs. i.e less than equivalent premises would cost nearby, never mind increased costs and employee travel costs.

United we stand, divided they pick us off.
Always thank people who have helped you immediately, as they may not be around to thank later.

There is also another petition for more land to be made available for allotments if anyone is interested.

Mr Mb & I have signed. Like your idea Andrew O. When they announced that the 'nation was delighted to have the Olympics' I did wonder which nation they had asked!

Signed the Manor Gardens petition today.

This sounds like another Millenium Dome fiasco. The only people who will benefit are bankers and the like who will cream the lot. I think the true cost of the Olympics has been carefully hidden and the advantages made very glossy.

Me too, can't believe you can take all that land to expand a golf course. Such a shame.

Got in touch with the Rick Stein website, who say they arent exactly sure which allotment site it was that he visited, think they said it was in south east London. (Not knowing London, not sure if this is the same area).

                      Would you believe it?

The Rick Stein programme was on sky tonight - the allotments were in Hackney - is this the same place as the petition? DDL

DDL, looks like you could be right - found their website

"Manor Gardens Allotments is a 1.8 hectare site on the east marshes of Hackney. It’s a wedge of land between the River Lea and Bully Point Nature Reserve – and right in the middle of the 2012 Olympic site. "

Do you think he would get involved?

Both me and my OH, woolymummoth have sighed it. I agree with Madderbat; I don't see the Olympics being of any benefit to anyone; except land developers.

I'm not sure Vik - all I did was to ask if they knew where it was via their question us bit on the web site. They said they didn't know. Perhaps someone could email them? Dexterdog

Any chance of 'stickying' this OP on the OTT/Chichat thread? I didn't see it on here and only realised about it through an email from kitchen_gardens email list.

Given the current climate you'd think the govt. wouldn't want to be seen bull-dozing allotments?
