  • GYO needs your help - please vote in this official Grow Your Own poll

We're keen to know whether you think usused brownfield sites should be turned into allotments. The New Local Government Network (NLGN) is urging Gordon Brown to create new community allotments on this remarkable – as yet – untapped resource. The think tank’s publication Can You Dig It? has also proposed the introduction of a tax incentive for landowners that would give them financial rewards for creating plots on unused pieces of their estates. Should a voluntary system not be effective, NLGN suggests that the Government instigate a Large Private Estates Commission through which it could lend unused land over to the local community for the creation of allotments. Please vote in our poll and give us your views.

Don't see why the government should be forcing people to give up land for anything although morally it would be nice if some landowners did.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Sorry- if I'd worked hard all my life to buy a bit of land- I reckon I should be able to do what I want with it.

The government should provide more allotments- but peeps may need to travel further to gt to them.

Most brownfield sites wouldn't be organic for many years to come- they often need loads of toxic clean up don't they????

Hmmm sounds like a the government is trying to give the councils a get-out cluase and absolve them of their obligations!

For starters allotments should be classified as greenfield sites and they shouldf allow conversion of some frankly rubbish bits of agricultural land thats sat round some of our cities to be rented by the councils at agricultural rates for such wastelands and turned into allotments ......

Brownfield sites; are those that have already been used for development and are not being currently used; often called 'previously developed sites'

In the plan/build/maintain/demolish cycle, they have been through the cycle at least once.

More brownfield sites should be used for further development before worrying about them being used for allotments. Large areas of brownfield land could be re-developed and ease the need for grabbing valuable greenfield land for the same purpose.

I wouldn't have thought a brownfield site would be particularly suitable for use as allotments then. All that concrete, footings, drains, etc.

I agree RL, I can't see how they would be suitable at all. I also agree with Nicos. Governments shouldn't be 'deciding' what to do with private land, although I am in favour of reasonable incentives for farmers who dedicate quality unused land to allotment use.
