  • It's getting painful sitting on these here tenterhooks!

I shared with you all earlier this year the pretty frustrating experience of moving from my half allotment to a full allotment, which after clearing 20 years of rubbish and lugging all my fixtures and fittings from one to the other was found to have serious drain collapse and 6 inches of standing water, which meant I had to abandon it and lug everything back!

Well - I've learnt this week that my other half plot neighbours are moving to a full plot and theirs is coming up for grabs - have been told possibly at the end of the month, but will have to wait for the notice on the board and hand in a letter saying I'd like it - first come, first served and all that!

The lure of upgrading to a full plot with the only effort required being stepping 2ft to the right is sooo appealing after last time's nightmare - I'm having sleepless nights and dreaming of bargeing my way past other potential plot holders to get there first!! I'm going three miles out of my way every morning just to check the notice board ready to do the Chariots of Fire bit - I think I'm going slightly mad here

Can't you put a letter in saying you would like it when it becomes available and then put another one in formally requesting it when it does become available? I've never had a lottie so don't know about protocol. Wish you luck anyway.

Noooo I'm not that brave I'm afraid - someone has already dared to do that - trying to steal a march - and there was a ceremonial, public ripping up of the letter as a lesson to all of us shrinking back into our corners

Personally I'd be inclined to quietly ask the previous tennent to let you know when they are quitting and be ready to follow them into the office/shed/whatever with your "I'd like the plot please" letter.

I'm told the notice is going on the board tomorrow! I'm contemplating sleeping in the shed overnight, although it's only about 5ft x 5ft and I'm 5ft 6. Could go corner to corner I suppose. I'm definitely losing the plot (no pun intended!)

If nothing else - be up before and at the plot for sunrise.

And be SURE you don't oversleep in the shed if you do that... can you IMAGINE being uncomfortable all night only to fall into a deep sleep and miss the notice going up and being first in with your letter? Haha.

I imagine that you should be kinda priority in that you're already next in line for a full plot and this would mean getting it without needing to move... it'd be a bit silly to do it any other way, I think. Dunno if that will count for much though.

            Good luck.

My Dad has the letter in his pocket and I'm to meet him tomorrow at just after first light - I said I would go, but don't think he trusts me to get there early enough. Mind have told him not to choose tonight to 'pop his clogs', as he's always telling me 'I won't be here for ever as I'm living on borrowed time, now I've passed the biblical 3 score and ten.

Yeah hey - deed done! It's mine, all mine, no-one else's, just mine!! Drawing pins only half in when letter handed over.

Attached are pics of my existing allotment which is the one with the raised beds and my newly acquired extension two feet across the path. I'm a big girl now with a FULL allotment of my own. It's winking at me already to start planting!

                      Good on ya Mogs!
Planned and executed with military precision!

I'm also delighted your dad didn't pop his clogs!

That made me laugh - a nice image.

All in all I think the sensible result came about - good luck with your second half!

I'd just sat down at the puter and remembered that you were hoping to hear today so made a bee-line for your thread.

                              Well done!
