  • Garden Centre Allotments

I was in Jardinere (Wyevale) on the Kenilworth road at Balsal Common the other day and noticed they had fenced of the old overflow car park and turned it into allotments each one with a small shed and 6x4 greenhouse .
So being nosey i walked across to have a look and on the notice board was Allotments for rent see member of staff for details i was not brave enough.
Just wonder what the rents would be there was about 25....jacob

Jacob - why not brave enough? Are you looking for an allotment or just being nosey? If looking and it's local to you - get in touch quickly before they are all snapped up!

It's brilliant that they've provided allotments though - and probably a bit of a certainty to up their business too. Shrewd.

A that's ok then. It'd be a bad move to miss out on a freshly prepared allotment with shed and greenhouse ready to start using at this time of the year if you didn't have one already.
        Glad you've not missed out.

Well it's nice to hear of Garden Centres catching up with the 'grow your own' trend, Jacob - and probably a very finanically astute move on their part! They can get people to pay for the privilege of providing a demonstration plot for their customers!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Just noticed this thread. I have posted something similar on allotment advice so feel free to delete it mods.

The link for the garden centre plots is Grow Your Own Plots Available To Rent

Basically its a £5 a week for a standard plot then £10 for one with shed and greenhouse. Not sure if theres any left just read about it in gardening Which.

I agree with Jeanied very cunning from a business point of view, but £260 for a year its a bit steep for me. But supply and demand and all that.

I saw those too and gave it some thought - but I too think they would be quite pricey (not that I've enquired either!). The location is a little too far for me and taking the children over there I would be collared into buying cake from the very nice tea room at a very nice price each weekend. If you find out though, let us know and I'll do vice versa.

I know they have at least one at the local wyvale here but I think the local school has it.

Not just that, but when you think, "If only I had some squash seeds for that space", you've got a GC right next door to spend your lottie budget in

                    What a genius business model.
Open an allotment site, rent it out and then provide a handy place to buy all the tools, seeds and other that you require.

My local garden cenre (Rouken Glen, near Linlithgow, Forth Road Bridge area) started doing allotments in the field next door in the spring, and has just set up a second field. I got mine the other week. £140.00 a year for 10mx10m plot with 6x4ft shed. I was delighted to go and choose mine and find the field had been ploughed - will make life considerably easier! I'm waiting for the rain to ease off a bit (fingers crossed) today before I get going on putting up a fence and gate.
